How to Choose the Right Channel Letter Size
Choosing the right channel letter size is important for visibility, readability, building proportions, and local sign requirements. Letters that are too small may be difficult to read from the street, while oversized letters can look unbalanced or exceed the available sign area.
Here are the main factors to consider when choosing the size of your channel letter signs.
1. Consider the Viewing Distance
The farther away customers will see your sign, the larger the letters should be.

For storefronts close to sidewalks, smaller letters may work well. Signs viewed from moving vehicles usually require larger channel letters.
2. Consider the Building Size
The sign should be proportional to the storefront or building facade.
For small retail stores, restaurants, salons, and offices, 8–18 inch channel letters are commonly suitable.
For larger commercial buildings, shopping centers, warehouses, and roadside businesses, 18–36 inch letters or larger may provide better visibility.
3. Check the Available Sign Area
Measure the usable width and height of the installation area before selecting the letter size.
Consider:
-
Total logo width
-
Letter spacing
-
Building architectural features
-
Windows and doors
-
Raceway or backer panel dimensions
-
Required clearance around the sign
The complete sign should fit naturally within the available wall space.
4. Consider Font and Stroke Width
Letter height is not the only factor affecting readability.
Thin fonts may need to be larger than bold fonts to achieve the same visibility. Very narrow strokes may also limit the space available for LED modules and internal wiring.
For smaller channel letters, simple and bold fonts usually provide better illumination and readability.
5. Consider the Letter Color
Different illuminated colors have different perceived brightness.
White, green, yellow, and red channel letters generally provide strong visibility, while blue, purple, and pink can appear less bright under the same size, power, and material conditions.
For longer viewing distances, avoid using very small letters in lower-brightness colors.
6. Consider Installation Height
A sign installed higher on a building normally needs larger letters.
For example, a 10-inch letter may work well above a ground-level storefront entrance, but the same size may look too small when installed several stories above the street.
The higher the sign is installed, the more important letter size and stroke width become.
7. Check Local Sign Regulations
Many cities and shopping centers have rules covering:
-
Maximum sign area
-
Maximum letter height
-
Sign placement
-
Illumination
-
Projection from the wall
-
Electrical requirements
Always confirm local sign codes or landlord requirements before production.
Common Channel Letter Sizes
For most commercial projects, channel letters typically range from approximately 6 inches to 36 inches or larger.
Some common applications include:
-
Small indoor signs: 4–8 in
-
Small storefronts: 8–12 in
-
Retail stores and restaurants: 12–18 in
-
Large storefronts: 18–24 in
-
Shopping centers and large buildings: 24–36+ in
